Quick question:

Does anyone even bother with personal fic sites or archives anymore? Or should I just say fuck it and stop updating mine with new or missed fic, thus saving myself time, hassle and whatever else?

I've never had a seperate fic archive or site - I've always archived on my LJ account. Actually, that's one of the primary reasons I joined LJ in the first place. That and because of all the pretty icons.

But I digress. I do know people in other fandoms who continue to maintain seperate fic or creative sites/journals, but they tend to be involved in fandoms that are more active than WW, and I think their volume of production is high and they see it as a way to organize their posts easily.

Not a very helpful response, but there it is. *g*

Actually, very helpful. It simply confirms what I'm leaning towards anyhow. Stop electronically updating online and just keeping my own electronic and paper copies.

I've been wondering that same thing myself.

I'm not entirely sure what *exactly* you mean, but I still have my own personal archive on my own LJ that I update whenever I share something new. Its the reason I joined LJ in the first place and even though updates are few and far between it keeps it all organized and I'm a tish proud of it. :)

So, yeah. Whatever thats worth to you.

Nope, not LJ. LJ is something else entirely. I'm talking about something that is personally the author's and not part of a community or a place like LJ/MySpace/Facebook.

Like my original site or Jo&Ryo's site or any number of other fic author sites.

Oh yes yes yes, I am familiar with those from back in the day, lol. If I were you I'd just archive them all here since thats where (I'm assuming) most people know you from, unless you're really super uber attached to that one (which I'm guessing by this post that you're not). Just easier.

Wow, I never once thought of myself as a BNF or even aspired to be one, but reading my current fic trending that way is both painful and honest. Be careful what you wish for an all that...

In any case, I was thinking of not carefully archiving ANYWHERE. I was just sort of curious what the current trend is.

Thank you so much for the honest answer though! :)

Oh I didn't mean it as a bad thing! If you interpreted that and felt some sort of sting that was not my intention! Damn tone being so hard to convey over the interweb! I just clunk around here on LJ and never venture out of the realms, so I have no idea where else you post (see: I didn't know you had a separate archive). I just read and enjoy all your fic on here, thats all.

I'll try to remove my foot from my mouth now, it'll no doubt hurt a bit. :)

ETA: All that and I forgot a "sorry." I'm sorry!

Eeks! wait! no! Stop!

No need for a sorry, and I don't think there's any foot in mouth thing going on. I just meant it's kind of ouchie because I wrote about half my stuff BEFORE lj and some of the ones I have an emotional attachment to (not the best ones, the emotional ones) are those fics and...

This is me, reminding myself to NOT ask questions on days I am cranky and sensitive! :P B

No apologies needed, no feet in mouth (yuckie!) and all that. Because I know what you meant and how you meant it. Really. :)

Ahahaha, oh the internet and the misunderstandings it creates. :)

Speaking as a reader, not a writer--having things archived on a site is helpful when you're either browsing an author's catalogue, or searching for something you *know* you once read. If the site exists, it's occasionally disappointing to find that it's not updated anymore.

However--if an author keeps their pieces well-tagged in a place like LJ, so they're easy for readers to find, it's not quite so bad. Many readers may not know where to find an author if their site is essentially abandoned, though.

Yes, but if it's all West Wing, I don;t think there's much call for people browsing my past works and I'm pretty sure no one's looking for older fics of mine that aren't listed elsewhere.

A comment saying I'm not archiving anymore might be nice though. I shall give that some serious thought.

I search for WW stuff all the time--I haven't read everything! And new fans are still trickling in. Plus, not everyone knows where 'elsewhere' might be--i.e., the National Library, etc. Sometimes you find great stuff just by following a link.

But yeah, a comment, or even a link saying 'you can find any new fics, whatever there might be, here at LJ' or wherever. Leaving a 'link trail' is always helpful (until the links die, but that's another story).

Mine's pretty much abandoned. I keep meaning to do one last, "All right, folks, this is everything" update for all the WW stuff before I leave it forever...not that there's been much to add since ::checks:: uh, 2003?

I just want to tell you, yana, that I go back and visit your fic site *all the time*. Seriously. So even though you don't write ww anymore (weeps), I beg you not to take your site down.
29th-Oct-2008 09:48 pm (UTC)
I think you should do whatever you have time for but you should definitely update somewhere as you write, even if it's just on your LJ page. You're right about the lower numbers in the fandom but it is still going. And new people discover the show every day.

Sure, the numbers are dwindling but it's not really about the size of the audience, right? All you need is one; the rest are for ego.

No, it's not about the numbers, which is why I was wondering about the archiving ANYwhere. Post - ok, but make sure I tag or make it accessible later through LH? Not so much, since they're all going to be saved on my harddrive anyhow.

Does that make sense?

I still go to website to look for those favourites all the time... okay, not all the time, but when I'm procrastinating. But I have visited your site and Jo and Ryo's and most places on HI time and time again. I find it more convinient than LJ a lot of the time.

It's what I'm familiar with. When people stop updating, it's sad. When their sites go away, it's even sadder. I fear the day HI disappears.

As a reader, I think maintaining a fic archive is a good thing in general no matter where it is.

If I might make a suggestion? Leave your website up if you can, but make one final post that says "You can my more recent fic here at _________". Not everyone knows/remembers that you have an LJ. So, if they check someplace, it will be your website. Even though the fandom is old, sometimes you like to reread a familiar fic and it's distressing when the website disappears! I can think of a couple of authors who did a vanishing act that way.

However, maintaining two seperate fic lists is tough. My National Library account is so behind, it's ridiculous!!

As someone who has just started reading WW stuff, I find it very useful when an author has some sort of easy-to-find complete list of their work. But I don't really care whether that list is in an LJ post or on a separate site.
21st-Dec-2008 03:52 am (UTC)
And I just realized that I misread the date on this post and you are probably no longer looking for answers. :) Sorry!
21st-Dec-2008 06:33 pm (UTC)
Actually, no, I appreciate it a lot and I AM still looking for answers, as I haven't quite figured out what I want to do long term yet. So this is useful. :)
21st-Dec-2008 06:35 pm (UTC)
Oh good! I am just starting to write West Wing stuff (hoping to post my first today) and am trying to figure out whether to archive on my own site or just LJ or what...
